During the year, Year 5 have had Bikeability training. 'Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. There are three Bikeability levels, each designed to improve cycling skills, no matter what is known already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees from the basics of balance and control, all the way to planning and making an independent journey on busier roads.'
British Cycling training
During the year, Year 6 have had cycling training during 'Go-Ride' sessions provided by 'British Cycling'. These sessions are all about getting more young people into cycling. They are provided by a professional cycling coach who provides high quality coaching activities, delivered in a traffic-free environment.
Balance bike training
Pupils in Reception and Year 1 receive balance bike training. Balance bikes are bikes without pedals. Children use their feet to keep their balance and push themselves off. The bikes are easy to ride and are perfect for those who aren't ready for pedals. Balance bikes develop balance, motor skills, spatial awareness, stamina, agility and co-ordination. They also help to increase and maintain children's self-confidence as they are in control of the bike.
Pupils in Year 2 receive scooter training in which they learn about the scooter and safety gear and how to balance on and control a scooter. Skills include balancing, pushing, stopping, taking corners, gliding and navigating obstacles. The main aim is to increase confidence and for the children to have a better ability to control the scooter and themselves under a variety of riding conditions to ensure they are as safe as possible.
